Code of the Street

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfw3qqTW4pk
In this youtube video we are shown an angry black woman beating the crap out of a skinny balck man. We are not told what this man did or can hear what they are saying clearly, but it portrays some very interesting things that we learn about in code of street. In code of the street people from the street sort of govern themselves and use fighting as a way of getting respect which is needed. They feel that they need to settle things themselves, because police don't like nor care about them. In this video the woman is beating up this smaller man and a cop drives by and does nothing. He doesn't even slow down. This really showed me that what they talk about in this book is true, and gave me a new perspective on this video as well.

Balls of Steel

Balls of Steel is a comedic show broadcasted in England. This show featurs comical skits performed by various people, such as "Neg's Urban Sports" and "The Annoying Devil." In both of these a mna goes up to random strangers and does things to make them feel very uncomfortable and sometimes angry. In one instance from Neg's Urban Sports he plays a game called human skittles. In this game he goes into a store full of people and yells for everyone to get on the floor and sees how many people he can get to do this. The people inside are set up by their friends, but have no idea its going to happen. This could be very scary and is very deviant. I wish I would have done something like this for my deviance project. This is very funny and there are many other videos similar to it. Here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOLjngGURxU

Brother's Keeper

In the movie Brother's Keeper a man is accused of killing his own brother. This man was one of four, and after the death he and two of the other brother's are left living in a small garbage filled farm house. These men are poor, dirty, and very uneducated. The police in this movie pretty much convince this man that he killed his brother and trick him into pleading guilty to the charge. The man is so ignorant he bairly had any idea what was going on. His brother was very sick and the police said the man killed his brother as a way of helping to end his suffering. How do they know this is not what the man wanted, to have his closest brother end his pain and suffering anyway. Why would this be so terrible? The man in the end was inocent, but still it makes me wonder. If the police could almost send this man to jail for murder what else can they and have they gotten away with. How many other innocent men are behind bars.

Movie

In this movie a native american man and his brother live in a horrible area both live very opposite lives. One man is a police officer and the other a poor alcoholic. The town is filled with alcoholic like Mogi, the drunk brother, and poor native americans. In the beginning a young native american boy is murdered by two other drunk punks. Ralph, the cop, finally has lost it. He then and begins to committ acts of deviance. He finds the boys who did it and smashed their knee's with a bat and he also goes to the local liquor store and burns it down. Little did he know his brother Mogi was inside. Although the acts he committed were deviant he helped the police find the boys who murdered the young man in the beginning, and helped decrease the rate of alcohol consumption in the town. In the end he throws a bucket of paint on the nose of George Washington on Mount Rushmore as a tribute to his brother who dies from symptoms related to alcohol. This movie also shows how the United States has abandoned these people who were the original inhabitants of this great country and have forgotten about them.

Return To Mississippi

This film was a documentary movie about 13 college students who went to Mississippi in 1966 to take part in a work camp. This film was created by Professor Paul Murray and a recent graduate of Siena William Helmer. These 13 men and women many years ago helped to build new homes, taught underprivelaged children , and helped to register new voters as well. They aided members of the black community even in times where for a white person t do something like this was not acceptable by society and was seen as deviant. Forty years later eight of the original 13 went back to this community to see how they helped this community and the members in it and reunite with them and look at the progress.

Michael Walzer

The Michael Walzer lecture was not exactly what I had expected. This man is a philosopher and addressed some very interesting topics from some unique ways and point of views. He spoke about human rights and about what is going on in the world today. Michael Walzer believes that that the state needs to intervine in some issues and that if necessary we need to start thinking about bringing the military in as well. In some ways I agree with some things, but I do not agree with a lot as well. Some of these ideas are a little too drastic. Over all though I was not pleased with this lecture. It was difficult to understand what Michael was saying and hard to follow his ideas. I thought it was very boring and hard to sit through.

Into the Wild

This movie was a very moving film that really made you think about the way society is and its' principles. In this movie a boy named Chris graduates from a prestigious college with a wealthy family, only to abandon them to go and live in the wilderness. This boy had a weaalthy family who because of his success his family wants to buy him a car and he will not allow it. He then goes runs away and doesn't tell his family. He burns all of his money and gives his savings to a charity. The movie then portray's his road to living in the wilderness and the people he meets and the lives he changes along the way. He preaches to others about how society is all wrong how all people care about is money and can't understand how people can do so much harm and be so cruel to one another. He eventually learns all the things he will need to survive in the wild, such as hunting, fishing, how to keep warm, and basically just how to stay alive. Chris then takes his journey into the alaskan wilderness and achieves his goal of ultimate freedom from society. Although he dies poor and living in the back of a bus in the wilderness, he dies at his happiest and free.
